Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to reduce the appearance of the labia minora. (1) Labiaplasty can be performed for both cosmetic and physiological reasons. The labia naturally vary in shape, size, and color. However, women with elongated or enlarged labia may experience discomfort or pain when performing daily activities, and may even feel self-conscious when wearing certain clothing. Discoloration and other concerns can also cause one to feel self-conscious during intimacy.

About Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a procedure that reduces the protrusion, size, and shape of the labia to enhance one’s comfort and intimate appearance.
There is no single standard for what ‘normal’ or ‘perfect’ genitalia looks like. Some women have labia that are naturally hidden inside the labia majora, while others have elongated labia that extend past it. Some women experience something called labial hypertrophy, which is characterized by the inner labia being longer than normal. (2) Dr. Rotemberg can perform labiaplasty to help address each patient’s unique concerns.
Labiaplasty Benefits
- Increased Comfort: Many patients find significant relief from discomfort caused by enlarged labia during physical activities or sexual intercourse.
- Enhanced Aesthetics: Improved symmetry and reduced protrusion can enhance genital appearance.
- Improved Confidence: Feeling more confident about one’s intimate regions can significantly boost self-esteem.
- Customized Treatment Options: We offer various surgical techniques to meet patients’ unique anatomical needs and aesthetic preferences, ensuring tailored results.
- Minimal Scarring: With careful incision placement, scarring is often discreet.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates for labiaplasty include women experiencing discomfort caused by enlarged or elongated labia or those who also seek to address asymmetry and other aesthetic concerns.
All candidates interested in labiaplasty should be in good overall health without any underlying medical conditions that can impact the recovery or results of the procedure. Realistic expectations should also be held. Patients should also be nonsmokers or willing to quit using nicotine products until fully recovered. Dr. Rotemberg will determine whether labiaplasty is the right treatment for each patient during their consultation.
Personal Consultation
At Rotemberg Plastic Surgery, each individual is required to attend a personal consultation at our office in Miami. This consultation not only allows us to determine each individual’s candidacy but also ensures their treatment is tailored to their goals.
Each patient’s consultation will begin with a discussion about their medical history, concerns, and treatment goals. Dr. Rotemberg will perform a medical examination to evaluate the condition and anatomy of each patient’s labia. Using the gathered information, she will determine the best techniques to help each patient achieve their desired results. This may include variations or combinations of different techniques. She may also suggest additional treatments or procedures that may help each patient further refine their results.

Preparation
In preparation for their labiaplasty, patients will need to take time off from work and other social commitments, as well as arrange transportation home from the procedure. Patients should discontinue using blood-thinning medications and herbal supplements as indicated by Dr. Rotemberg.
If applicable, please refrain from smoking at least one month before the appointment, and drinking alcohol should be avoided several days in advance. Dr. Rotemberg will provide any further preparation instructions during each consultation.
Procedure
Each patient’s procedure will begin with either sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia; however, patients may also choose to remain awake if they wish. Once administered, Dr. Rotemberg will create guiding marks in the treatment area. She will then perform one of three labiaplasty techniques:
- Trim Resection: The trim technique, or trim resection labiaplasty, is performed by placing vertical incisions along the top part of both sides of the labia minora. This technique is primarily performed on patients who possess long and thin labia but are concerned about discoloration.
- Wedge Resection: This technique is often performed to preserve the natural edges of the labia. The wedge resection may involve techniques such as V-Y advancement or Z-plasty, depending on the case. Dr. Rotemberg can excise a V or Y-shaped wedge of tissue from the center of the labia minora before suturing the ends. Because this procedure preserves the edges of the labia, discoloration is not usually addressed.
- Modified Wedge Resection: The modified wedge resection builds off of the standard wedge resection. Incisions are still made at the center of the labia, but instead are made in a shape similar to that of an L. This variation may address the clitoral hood and is ideal for patients concerned about visible scarring.
- Clitoral Hood Reduction: For some patients, excess tissue around the clitoral hood can contribute to a bulky or asymmetrical appearance. Clitoral hood reduction is a procedure that involves removing small amounts of redundant tissue from the sides to create a more balanced and proportionate look. This may be performed alongside labiaplasty for a more cohesive result. Dr. Rotemberg takes great care to preserve sensitivity and function while achieving each patient’s aesthetic goals.

Recovery
Recovery after labiaplasty is often quicker than many patients may think. As labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, individuals will be released home to continue healing. Patients can walk immediately after their procedure, but Dr. Rotemberg strongly recommends resting. Sitting and putting pressure on the treatment area should be avoided for the time being.
It is common for many patients to experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness throughout the initial healing phase. These effects will dissipate on their own, but may also be managed using over-the-counter pain medications. Patients will need to avoid swimming pools, jacuzzis, or baths for the first two months of their recovery. Using harsh body washes and tampons and engaging in sexual activity should also be refrained from. Dr. Rotemberg will provide each patient with more detailed post-operative instructions during their personal consultation.
Results

The results of labiaplasty may take several weeks to manifest as any residual swelling subsides. Patients will enjoy a newfound sense of daily comfort, especially when engaging in physical activity or sexual intercourse. Those who experienced moisture and hygiene concerns will find that cleaning will become easier, and fewer infections will occur. More form-fitting and revealing clothing can also be worn with greater confidence and comfort.
