What is a Brow Lift?
Good Candidates
Brow lift candidates include men and women who are between 40 and 60 years old who have sagging eyebrows and wish to raise them to a more youthful position. Potential candidates may also want to reduce the appearance of forehead and frown lines. Most candidates are drawn to the brow lift procedure because they want longer lasting results than Botox would provide. Botox is however sometimes used in conjunction with the procedure for heightened results.
Some characteristics of the ideal candidate include:
- Healthy
- Non-smoker
- Sagging eyebrows
- Unhappy with their brow appearance
- Have deep set lines and wrinkles above and between the eyebrows
- Impaired vision from drooping eyebrows
- Have realistic expectations
Men and women interested in learning more about the procedure and want to see if they are a good candidate are encouraged to schedule a consultation.
Benefits
There are many benefits to undergoing a brow lift procedure, including:
- Younger appearance
- Refreshed look
- Reduced lines and wrinkles
- More approachable appearance
- Improved eyesight
- Lasting results
Consultation
Since this is a very customized procedure, results will vary based on the patient’s degree of brow sagging and their aesthetic goals.
Dr. Silvia Rotemberg then performs a physical examination of the upper third of the face, establishing if the patient is a good candidate for a brow lift. Next, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg takes the information she has gathered and devises a personalized treatment plan. This will determine which technique she believes will provide the patient with the results they are looking for. After determining the best course of treatment for the patient, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will provide customized preparatory and recovery instructions. A custom quote will be provided at the end of the consultation.
Procedure
Dr. Silvia Rotemberg performs the surgery using an open, endoscopic, or a limited brow lift technique. During the procedure, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg lifts the forehead skin, removes the excess, repositions tissue, and then pulls the skin tight to raise the eyebrows and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Once the eyebrows have been lifted to the desired height, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg closes the incisions. After the procedure, the incision sites are bandaged and the patient is transferred to the recovery room where they will slowly wake in the company of our skilled surgical staff.
Open Brow Lift
An Open Brow Lift, also known as a Coronal Brow Lift, is characterized by incisions made directly behind the patient’s hairline which decreases scar visibility. Once Dr. Silvia Rotemberg creates the appropriate incisions near the patient’s temple area, she removes excess skin and then adjusts the underlying forehead tissue and brow muscles to create a more youthful contour and better placement. This technique allows her the most access to the surgical site, providing youthful, elevated brows and dramatically smoother skin.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
An Endoscopic Brow Lift utilizes an endoscopic instrument to guide the surgery. This is a long thin tube with a camera which allows the doctor to better see under the skin. Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will make small incisions along the eyebrow for the entrance of the instrument. It informs her of the best locations to reposition muscle or tissue to create better contour. Good candidates for this technique are patients who require only a small amount of skin or tissue removed for an ideal lift. This is a modern approach to brow lifts; the results tend not be as dramatic as the Open Brow Lift technique because the Endoscopic Brow Lift uses the smallest incisions of the three techniques, but results are still very noticeable.
Limited Incision Brow Lift
This hybrid technique involves a series of smaller incisions beginning near the temple on one side of patient’s head and continues along the hairline to the opposite temple. This technique can be combined with an upper blepharoplasty, also known as an upper eyelid lift, because of the placement of these incisions. The brow lift on its own does not address the appearance of “crow’s feet” or drooping eyelids. The incisions made can be used to soften lines around the eyes and eyebrows as well as diminish frown lines. These procedures are often combined to create the desired result.
Recovery
For the first 5-7 days after surgery, patients are asked to sleep on their back with their heads slightly elevated to reduce swelling and avoid disturbing the surgical site. Patients are also instructed to use ice packs near the surgical site to ease swelling and bruising. Normal activities can be resumed in about a week. Post-surgical brow lift patients are urged to not perform any heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks following the surgery. Sutures are usually removed a week after surgery. Scars are not discernible because the incisions are made behind the hairline
Results
Patients can begin to see results right after the procedure, but improved results can be enjoyed as soon as swelling subsides.
The brow lift will reduce the appearance of frown lines, sagging forehead skin, and deep-set furrowed brow lines,
Complementing Procedures
Facelift
The brow lift procedure is commonly performed with a facelift because a facelift does not address the upper third of the face. A facelift is designed to remove loose skin and reposition tissue and muscle in the lower two-thirds of the face. This is done with discreet incisions along the hairline and ear so scars are undetectable. By combining a facelift with a brow lift, patients enjoy all-encompassing facial rejuvenation from top to bottom. For even more comprehensive results, patients may choose to get a neck lift as well.
Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery is also commonly performed with a brow lift for those who want additional rejuvenation of the upper third of the face. Eyelid surgery removes loose lower and upper eyelid skin and addresses under eye puffiness. Patients can choose to have upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or a combination of the two depending on their desired results. Patients choose to undergo eyelid surgery along with a brow lift because a brow lift may lift the upper eyelids ever so slightly, but not to the extent that upper eyelid surgery can. This is because a brow lift will simply lift the brow and the skin below, but eyelid surgery will excise loose upper eyelid skin. This creates rejuvenated and alert eyes.
Botox
A brow lift can reduce the appearance of forehead lines and lines in between the brows, but the addition of Botox skyrockets results. Botox is a non-surgical neurotoxin specifically designed to diminish forehead lines and wrinkles between the brows. Botox can also treat crow’s feet for a more youthful appearance.
Cost
Cost of a brow lift is determined by multiple factors. Dr. Silvia Rotemberg can discuss pricing during the consultation. Some factors include: the technique used, other treatments advised to use in combination to treat the issue, anesthesia, and hospital facility. During the consultation, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will create a personalized treatment plan which can serve as the basis for a cost estimate.
