Fat transfer breast augmentation is a procedure that moderately increases the volume of your breasts. This natural approach gives you bigger, fuller, more lifted breasts by harvesting your own fat from another part of your body using liposuction. Feeling like your breasts are beautiful is a big part of owning your femininity. If you suffer from low self-esteem due to sagging, small, or asymmetrical breasts, but do not want implants, you may be a candidate for a fat transfer breast augmentation.

About Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer breast augmentation, also known as natural breast augmentation, is a way for women to add volume to their breasts without implanting foreign materials into their bodies. (1) Although implants are an effective breast augmentation solution, fat transfers are less invasive and the recovery process is faster. Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will take the fat from your body and inject it into your breasts to enlarge them. If you have uneven breasts or have lost breast volume due to age or weight loss, this procedure can help you achieve the look you desire with a fast recovery time.

Breast Reconstruction

Oftentimes, women who have had a mastectomy or lumpectomy find that a fat transfer to reconstruct their breasts is a very viable option. When a woman receives a lumpectomy to remove a cancerous tumor, her breasts may develop uneven lumps from lost tissue. A fat transfer can even out these areas and create full, even breasts. Fat transfers can reshape your breasts and increase your bust size if you have a health condition that causes deformities or underdevelopment. If you lost your breasts from a mastectomy and received breast reconstruction, fat transfers around your implants can also enhance your natural volume.

Benefits of Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

If you feel insecure about your breast size or shape, you may greatly benefit from receiving a fat transfer breast augmentation. Many patients choose a fat transfer breast augmentation instead of implants for the following reasons:

  • Smaller incision
  • Safer surgery
  • Natural looking
  • No foreign materials
  • Thinner in liposuction area
  • Minimal recovery time
  • Little to no scarring
  • Easy, quick procedure
  • Improved breast shape, size, and volume
  • Retain 50% to 60% of transferred fat cells
  • Boosted self-confidence

Candidates

Women with a decent amount of excess fat deposits in their bodies may be good candidates for fat transfer breast augmentation. Patients must be non-smokers who are in good health, with no history of breast cancer. If you have suffered from a condition that has caused breast deformity or if you have genetically smaller breasts and desire fuller, larger, shapelier breasts, the fat transfer breast augmentation procedure may be for you.

Ideal candidates must also understand the realistic results they can achieve and that they may need to undergo another procedure to get the desired effect. A fat transfer will be best for someone who wants a small increase in bust size (between 1-2 cup sizes), and implants are ideal for women who desire a larger aesthetic change. Patients must also be willing to get an annual mammogram, as well as one before their operation.

Preparation

To prepare for your procedure, do not take any blood thinning medications or consume alcohol for at least three weeks before your treatment. Please arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home and take care of you for the first 24-48 hours of your recovery. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment that either wraps, zips, or buttons in the front. You will not be able to lift anything over your head until you are fully healed. You should not wear anything tight around your breasts for six weeks after your procedure. If you have any questions in the days leading up to your procedure, please do not hesitate to contact us. We want you to feel as comfortable and prepared as possible for your fat transfer breast augmentation procedure.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Procedure

The entire fat transfer process takes 1-2 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will extract your fat in a way that protects the fat cells from destruction. During your procedure, we will use liposuction to remove fat from your stomach, thighs, love handles, or buttocks. Next, we will place the fat into a processor (centrifuge) that purifies it and prepares it for grafting. Finally, we will inject the purified fat into the breast with a micro-thin needle to fill any deflated areas in the breast with localized fat deposits. On average, around 50-60% of the transferred fat will remain permanently. To finish the procedure, we will close the incision site with sutures, wrap your breasts in a protective dressing, and cover the areas that received liposuction with a compression garment. We will then release you to go home and rest.

Recovery

Depending on the specific case, recovery time usually takes about 1 – 2 weeks, then patients can return to work and their regular activities. It is not uncommon to experience mild to moderate bruising and swelling following your procedure. You may feel sore and uncomfortable for the first few weeks as your body is healing, but it will subside.

We recommend not sleeping on your stomach or putting on any tight clothing or restrictive bras that would compress the breasts for 2 weeks after your procedure as live cells become cohesive with the breast tissue. Avoid taking aspirin or drinking alcohol, as this will affect optimum healing and intensify bruising. You may apply ice packs to reduce any swelling.

Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will see you for a follow-up appointment where she will check to make sure everything is healing properly and answer any more questions you may have.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

If you are experiencing sagging skin (ptosis), you might be a good candidate for our breast lift procedure. As we age, our breasts can start to droop. This can be frustrating if your clothes don’t fit properly or you feel like changes to your body are irreversible. You might want to receive both a fat transfer and breast implants, depending on the look you would like to achieve. (2) You can discuss your options with Dr. Silvia Rotemberg during your consultation to determine the best treatment plan

Although fat transfers and implants achieve the same results, both methods require a different procedure process. Fat transfer breast augmentation with implants increases your breast size by surgically inserting breast implants. Fat transfer breast augmentation only uses substances from your own body to produce a bust increase. Breast implants are a foreign object that has to be introduced to the body, but a greater bust increase can be achieved with a variety of implant options. One is not better than the other, as everyone has different aesthetic desires. For more about the procedures we offer to enhance your breasts, see our blog.

FAQ

Does fat transfer breast augmentation produce permanent results?

While fat transfer breast augmentation does provide long-lasting results, it is important to note that a portion of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body over time. However, the remaining fat cells establish a lasting presence that contributes to the enhanced breast size and shape. Your body will retain 50% to 60% of transferred fat cells, so we always harvest more fat than we will need. To maintain the best possible outcomes, it is essential to maintain a stable weight and lead a healthy lifestyle following the procedure.

Can I increase the volume of my breasts by several cup sizes?

Usually, a fat transfer breast augmentation can increase your breasts up to two cup sizes. If you are looking for a different result or a bigger bust size, breast augmentation with implants may be more suitable for your aesthetic needs.

Can fat transfer breast augmentation be combined with other procedures?

Yes, fat transfer breast augmentation can be combined with other procedures to provide patients with comprehensive enhancement and address multiple aesthetic concerns. Common combinations include breast lift, liposuction, or other body contouring procedures. During your consultation, your surgeon will customize a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and goals.
