The human body has an impressive ability to heal itself after injury. When it comes to the effects of aging, however, it can feel like we are fighting a losing battle. Dr. Silvia Rotemberg is proud to offer a skin rejuvenation procedure that harnesses the healing properties of our own bodies to achieve impressive anti-aging results: Microneedling with PRP Application.
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a concentrated serum of growth factors and cellular healing components that have been separated out of our own blood. PRP Application consists of a microneedling treatment, followed by topical application of PRP to the skin. Thanks to the channels created with the microneedling, the PRP penetrate deep into the dermis, restoring the skin’s ability to support and renew itself. Skin will not only look younger, tighter, and smoother, it will also heal more quickly and be in better condition overall!
If you would like to learn more about what PRP can do to restore healthy, youthful function of your skin, call Rotemberg Plastic Surgery today to schedule your private consultation.
Our blood does more than carry oxygen through our bodies.
White blood cells fight infectious diseases and other bodily invaders, while the disk-shaped platelets in our blood cells play the important role of clotting at the first sign of injury. These platelets themselves are a rich source of proteins, such as cytokines, which play a role in our body’s response to inflammation. The proteins in PRP contain hundreds of growth factors and other healing components. To give you a sense of PRP’s valuable healing potency, growth factors are 5 to 10 times more concentrated in PRP than in our own blood.
Platelet-rich plasma is produced by processing patients’ blood to separate out the platelet-rich plasma from the red blood cells.
Even though PRP has an impressive ability to restart healthy skin function on a cellular level, PRP’s applications extend beyond skin rejuvenation. PRP has been shown to be an effective way to improve the speed and quality of the body’s recovery from joint and ligament injury. PRP has also proven to be a successful method of jump starting patients’ hair growth, bringing patients’ hair back to a thicker, more youthful appearance.
What is PRP Application?
PRP application is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve both the topical and deep health of patients’ skin. Patients begin their treatment by giving a sample of their blood, which will be processed at Dr. Silvia Rotemberg’s office and separated into a potent, platelet-rich serum.
In order to see the best results from the PRP, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will perform Microneedling with the Skinpen, an easily-controlled device that houses a group of sterile medical-grade needles. The needles will be strategically inserted to create tiny channels in the skin that penetrate to the deeper dermis. By penetrating to this level of the skin, the fine needles stimulate new collagen production, promoting a youthful increase in skin volume. The creation of these microlesions signals to the body the need for healing. Your skin re-activates the renewal process that frequently slows down with age.
Patient’s platelet-rich plasma will next be applied to the skin. The microchannels allow the PRP to reach to the deepest level of your dermis. The PRP will stimulate your collagen production, as well as increase the quality and rate of your skin’s healing. The microchannels will also enable the newer, healthier skin to rise to the surface more quickly.
Over the weeks following your PRP application, your skin will renew itself.
The appearance of your scars and hyperpigmentation will diminish. Skin will be fuller and tighter thanks to your increased collagen production. This will fill in your fine lines and wrinkles and give the skin a more youthful quality overall. Thanks to the PRP, your skin will have an overall healthier function. Skin laxity will improve, the epidermis will better withstand damage and environmental strain, and you will have a healthy, noticeable glow!
Medical PRP Application Benefits
Fight aging with PRP application. This treatment, when performed by a skilled doctor like Dr. Silvia Rotemberg, has the impressive ability to accomplish a wide variety of improvements to skin health and appearance:
- Fill and smooth fine lines and wrinkles
- Erase skin discoloration
- Heal acne scars and blemishes
- Shrink pores
- Increase collagen production
- Achieve healthy skin “glow”
Medical microneedling, unlike at-home microneedling, reaches to the deep levels of the skin consistently and safely. Microneedling that is done in a non-sterile, non-medical setting risks damage to the skin.
Medical microneedling is a highly effective way to promote better skin function and achieve the most benefits from your PRP application possible. This minimally invasive treatment achieves major skin rejuvenation, simply by re-activating your body’s own natural healing functions with PRP.
PRP application is an excellent option for any patient who wants to achieve evenly-toned, youthful-looking skin, but does not feel ready to turn to a laser or more invasive treatment. In many cases, we achieve impressive results with PRP application that are comparable to the results we achieve with our more invasive procedures.
Patients who are looking to improve skin discolorations, skin texture, skin laxity, acne scars, or pore size are good candidates for the benefits of PRP application. Due to the safety and effectiveness of medical microneedling, PRP application is safe for men and women of all skin tones.
Patients who have active cold sores or acne are advised to wait to receive their PRP application until their condition improves.
Candidates who have anemia, bleeding disorders, or certain medical pre-existing conditions that could interfere with your ability to safely receive injections should discuss alternative skin rejuvenation options.
SkinPen Vs. Dermal Rolling
Our practice performs microneedling with SkinPen. SkinPen is an easily controlled mechanical device which contains a small group of fine, medical-grade needles. The SkinPen is used to create micro-channels in targeted areas of the skin in order to promote skin renewal and allow topical solutions, like PRP, to penetrate to the deep dermis. By using the SkinPen, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg guarantees that micro-channels are made at a clean 90-degree angle. The vertical motions of the micro-needles are automated, which ensures that the needles penetrate the skin at a safe and consistent depth.
Microneedling procedures were initially performed with dermal rollers. This device was similar to a small paint roller, with tiny needles on its surface. The issue with using a dermal roller to create micro-lesions is that the needles do not not consistently enter the skin at a 90-degree angle. This can cause skin tearing and undesired damage to the skin. Due to this increased trauma, the recovery required after dermal rolling is longer than that from microneedling.
A treatment with SkinPen is also guaranteed to be safe and hygienic.
The needles of a SkinPen are thrown away and replaced after every use. Dermal rollers, on the other hand, only have their built-in set of needles, which must be cleaned between patients.
The outcomes of dermal rolling can vary widely depending on the skill of the person handling the roller. Thanks to its design and more controlled method of administering the needles, SkinPen achieves a meticulous, consistent treatment.

Your Treatment with PRP
When you arrive at Rotemberg Plastic Surgery for your PRP application, a sample of your blood will be taken. Your blood will be processed through a centrifuge to create a plasma serum with a high concentration of your own platelets.
Your needle length will be modified to best address the unique needs of your skin.
Your face will be washed and a topical anesthetic cream will be applied to the skin. The cream will take 30 min to take effect. Once your skin is comfortably numb, you will receive your microneedling treatment. Using the SkinPen, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will create deep, clean micro-channels in the skin. The procedure will target the areas where volumization, skin healing, and skin tightening are desired.
After the micro-needling treatment is complete, Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will carefully apply your PRP serum to your skin. Thanks to the channels created by the fine needles, the PRP will penetrate to the level of the skin responsible for collagen production. The PRP will stimulate this collagen production, as well improve the speed and quality of the skin healing signaled by the micro-lesions created during the SkinPen treatment.
The skin will be red for 24 to 48 hours following your PRP application. Patients equate the sensation to the similar dry, tight feeling of having a sunburn. You will be prescribed a moisturizer to help reduce this redness and keep your skin hydrated. Some patients may experience mild flaking or scabbing, but these conditions will improve within a few days. You will not be required to take any downtime following your PRP application. Patients who would like to conceal any redness can do so with mineral makeup for the first few days after their treatment.
Avoid using facial scrubs, exfoliants, or any products that contain acid for the week following your PRP application. Do not wax your skin during this week. Wash hands thoroughly before applying cream or washing your face.
Avoid sun exposure during the week after your PRP application.
You will notice that your skin quality begins to improve the day following your PRP application. As your newer, healthier skin rises to the surface, your skin will become smoother and fuller over the weeks following your treatment. Thanks to the growth factors in PRP, your skin will renew itself, repairing and reducing scars and discolorations. The growth factors will also increase the collagen in your skin, improving your skin’s volume and filling in your fine lines and wrinkles. Thanks to your all-around healthier skin, your face will glow!
Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will speak with you about scheduling a round of microneedling treatments over the weeks following your PRP application in order to achieve your ideal skin rejuvenation and renewal.
